Dead By Daylight

Description

Dead By Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game where 4 survivors try to escape a trial while being hunted down by a ruthless killer. I am part of the team dedicated to designing new maps and improving the gameplay of previously existing maps.

My Responsibilities

New Map Design

  • Designing and prototyping new maps in grey blocks for future chapter releases

  • Supporting the art team as they replace the grey blocks with the final assets

  • Iterating on feedback from internal and external playtests to improve the map's design

Map Rebalance

  • Investigating problematic maps to determine which properties can be altered to improve the gameplay of those maps

  • Implementing changes to the map layouts and gameplay loops to improve player experience on the maps

  • Iterating on community and playtest feedback to improve the gameplay experience

Map Maintenance

  • Performing general maintenance and bug fixing across all maps

  • Designing new map tiles to add to the pool of available tiles for older map themes

New Map: Ormond Lake Mine

I was the level design owner of the Ormond Lake Mine map in charge of designing the individual tiles, structure and map layout, as well as collaborating with the level art team to bring the map from a grey block prototype to the finished product.

 This map was released in December 2024 as part of Dead By Daylight's Bone Chill event.

Design Goals

  • Design interesting structures set in a frozen abandoned mine

  • Develop new  gameplay encounters for players to explore using degrees of elevation

  • As always, create a fun and relatively balanced experience for players

New Map: Nostromo Wreckage

I was responsible for designing, prototyping and overseeing the implementation of the Nostromo Wreckage map.

This map was released in August 2023 as part of Dead By Daylight's Alien chapter.

Design Goals

  • Respect the original design and memorable locations within the Nostromo while incorporating Dead By Daylight gameplay

  • Utilize the massive size of the Nostromo to create a unique mix of indoor and outdoor areas

  • Create a fun and relatively balanced experience for players

Map Rebalance: Eyrie of Crows

I was tasked with investigating the properties of the Eyrie of Crows map to determine how it could be improved to give players a more balanced experience. The rebalanced version of the Eyrie of Crows was released in January 2023.

Design Goals

  • Adjust the size and shape of the map to create a more fair experience for all players

  • Modify the positioning of strong structures and gameplay objects to create a more even distribution

  • Add new map tiles to add more random generation in specific locations
